About the RoleAs part of our initiative to cultivate a new generation of data science talent, ONS is developing a robust early career data scientist pipeline. This role presents an exceptional chance for individuals with foundational data science skills eager to accelerate their development, gain hands-on experience, and work on impactful projects that serve millions of people across the UK.As an Associate Data Scientist (HEO), you will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including experienced Data Scientists, Data Engineers, and Software Engineers, to contribute to the development of analytical models, data pipelines, and statistical products that support essential UK government data. Your Key Responsibilities:Prepare, clean, and transform datasets for analysis.Conduct exploratory data analysis and create visual insights.Build and test straightforward machine-learning models under supervision.Contribute to data science projects that inform national statistics, forecasting, and research initiatives.Collaborate with Data Engineers and senior Data Science colleagues to ensure quality-assured outputs.Engage in continuous learning of new tools, techniques, and technologies as part of structured development pathways.This role is ideal for someone with a solid academic foundation and early hands-on experience who is eager to grow rapidly.Essential Qualifications:Proficiency in Python or R for scripting and building basic models.Understanding of statistical principles and model evaluation metrics.Ability to clean, prepare, and manipulate datasets effectively.Strong communication skills to explain findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.A curious, analytical mindset with a keen desire to learn and develop.Desirable Qualifications:A degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.Experience with cloud environments (e.g., AWS or Azure).Familiarity with data visualization tools such as Power BI, Plotly, or similar.Some exposure to machine learning libraries, such as Scikit-learn.Basic knowledge of Agile or collaborative delivery methodologies.Note: This position can only be based in the UK and cannot be performed overseas.
