About the job
Empowering the Future with Rare-Earth Metals
At Solcoa, we are dedicated to securing the supply chain for western rare-earth metals, which are crucial for powering advanced technologies such as fighter jets, electric vehicles, wind turbines, smartphones, and generators. As one of the few companies outside of China engaged in the production of rare-earth metals, we take pride in being the exclusive provider of a 100% U. S. supply of both light and heavy rare earths. Our innovative, carbon-zero processes transform end-of-life magnets directly into metal, enhancing energy independence and safeguarding one of the world’s most essential resources.
Join our agile, well-funded team as we rapidly expand Western rare-earth production and build a world-class workforce to address this critical challenge.
Position Overview , Research Engineer
As a Research Engineer, you will spearhead complex, first-principles research and development initiatives that enable large-scale rare-earth metal production. Your responsibilities will include designing and conducting high-temperature experiments, constructing and managing custom experimental rigs, interpreting data to extract key mechanisms, and translating laboratory innovations into reproducible processes for our demonstration plant. This position is highly technical and experimental in nature.
Key Responsibilities
Pyrometallurgical Research: Engage in calcination, vacuum/steam distillation, carbothermic/metallothermic reduction, smelting, and refining processes.
High-Temperature Electrochemistry: Work on molten-salt/molten-oxide electrolysis, cell design, and optimizing anode/cathode materials for current efficiency.
Nuclear Engineering Research: Explore molten-salt chemistries, materials compatibility, graphite/refractory behaviors, and high-temperature gas-cooled systems.
Metal Processing Engineering: Handle molten metal processing, casting, and powder metallurgy techniques including atomization, pressing, and sintering.
What You'll Achieve
Conduct bench and pilot experiments to evaluate kinetics, transport phenomena, and equilibria.
Develop and manage furnace systems under vacuum or inert atmospheres, along with retorts and crucibles.
Create and validate process flow diagrams; compute mass and energy balances; define operational parameters.
Utilize thermochemical modeling tools (CALPHAD/Thermo-Calc/FactSage/HSC) and phase diagrams to optimize experimental conditions and materials.
Analyze feed and product characteristics with techniques such as ICP-MS/OES, XRD, SEM/EDS, LECO O/N/H; ensure accurate element balances.
Produce comprehensive documentation: SOPs, test plans, hazard analyses, and data packages; confidently present findings with statistical validation.
Collaborate with machinists and technicians to fabricate experimental fixtures; specify necessary sensors, heaters, seals, and vacuum equipment.
