The Grain Grader Level 3 position plays a vital role in evaluating diverse grain types, including wheat, oil seeds, and pulses. This role involves providing expert technical guidance and training to junior inspectors, as well as direct communication with grain elevators to address grading concerns. The incumbent will conduct laboratory analyses, grading, and data review in accordance with the guidelines set forth by the Canada Grain Commission (CGC).Key Responsibilities:Execute all functions of a Grain Inspector and Level 2 Grader competently.Log, organize, store, distribute, and dispose of incoming samples post-inspection.Clean grain samples using carter dockage testers and prepare them for grading.Operate, maintain, and calibrate laboratory equipment (moisture meters, scales, carter dockage testers, protein testers, ELISA readers), ensuring compliance with operational standards.Assist in performing analyses such as moisture, protein, dockage, test weight, mycotoxins, germination tests, gluten tests, and falling number tests.Conduct additional branch-specific laboratory analyses (e.g., malt barley variety identification, audits).Maintain and monitor essential laboratory supplies (gloves, dust masks, filter papers, etc.).Keep work areas clean and organized.Adhere to all requirements under the Canada Grain Act and Canada Grain regulations.Follow CFIA protocols for sampling and CGC standards, as well as SGS standard operating procedures (SOPs) and client-specific specifications.Generate initial and final grading reports for food, container, and industrial inspections (including Government Inspection Services).Assist in preparing on-site final analysis reports by conducting inspections and completing reports.As a Grain Grader Level 3, you will also:Inspect and grade all grain types arriving at the laboratory or during on-site inspections.Conduct off-site grading and sampling duties, along with ad hoc projects.Collaborate with supervisors or senior staff to resolve daily production and process challenges, while providing technical and operational support to junior grading personnel.Review analytical data and report findings from on-site inspections and grading results to grain elevators.Conduct comprehensive grain inventory audits based on weight and grade.Offer guidance and leadership to colleagues, including indirect reports and peers.
