Notably, two-thirds of the 254 individuals exonerated by the Innocence Project are people of color, with 58% being Black. Data from the National Registry of Exonerations reveals that Black individuals account for 47% of known exonerations since 1989, despite representing just 13% of the U.S. population. Furthermore, Black individuals are seven times more likely to be wrongfully convicted of murder compared to their white counterparts; a Black person convicted of sexual assault is 3.5 times more likely to be innocent than a white individual in similar circumstances; and innocent Black individuals are 12 times more likely to be wrongfully convicted of drug possession than innocent white individuals. Key priorities include influencing public discourse on race and inequality, addressing racial disparities within the criminal justice system, scrutinizing the racial justice implications of technological advancements and algorithmic decision-making, challenging systemic forces that perpetuate racial segregation and economic disadvantage, and enriching legal education with a focus on racial justice.ABOUT THE POSITIONRacial bias and discrimination have historically undermined the integrity of the criminal legal system, contributing significantly to wrongful convictions. Notably, two-thirds of the 254 individuals exonerated by the Innocence Project are people of color, with 58% being Black. Data from the National Registry of Exonerations reveals that Black individuals account for 47% of known exonerations since 1989, despite representing just 13% of the U.S. population. Furthermore, Black individuals are seven times more likely to be wrongfully convicted of murder compared to their white counterparts; a Black person convicted of sexual assault is 3.5 times more likely to be innocent than a white individual in similar circumstances; and innocent Black individuals are 12 times more likely to be wrongfully convicted of drug possession than innocent white individuals. The Innocence Project's work has unveiled systemic biases in prosecution, policing, indigent defense, and forensic science.To further its mission, the (Special) Advisor on Race and Wrongful Conviction will serve as a trusted advisor and thought leader, providing expertise and guidance on matters of racial justice, equity, and bias.
