Role overview The Paralegal for the Post-Conviction Litigation (PCL) Clinic supports attorneys working to free individuals who have been wrongfully convicted. This role involves a mix of legal research, document drafting, and case file management. The paralegal also handles urgent litigation needs and helps organize departmental resources. Beyond routine paralegal duties, this position calls for creative problem-solving and sound judgment. The paralegal collaborates with attorneys, interacts with clients, assists with investigations, and may work with other departments, such as Communications. Key responsibilities Conduct legal research and draft documents for active cases Manage and maintain case files Respond to urgent litigation requests as they arise Organize departmental resources and support case management Collaborate with attorneys and law clinic students Assist with the year-long legal clinic and summer internship program Supervise and train interns and volunteers as needed May work with other departments, such as Communications Reporting and collaboration This position reports directly to a PCL attorney. The paralegal works closely with staff in the PCL Department and law clinic students, and provides support for both the legal clinic and internship program. Role overview The Paralegal for Post-Conviction Litigation (PCL) supports attorneys in efforts to free innocent individuals. This position handles research, drafts legal documents, and manages a variety of administrative responsibilities. Daily tasks include organizing case files, maintaining records and data, and responding to urgent litigation needs. Keeping departmental resources in order is also important in this role. PCL Paralegals work closely with attorneys to communicate with clients and assist with investigations. Collaboration may extend to other teams, such as Communications. Typically, the PCL Paralegal reports to two PCL Attorneys and may help train interns and volunteers. Teamwork with all PCL staff and law clinic students is a regular part of the job. Key priorities include influencing public discourse on race and inequality, addressing racial disparities within the criminal justice system, scrutinizing the racial justice implications of technological advancements and algorithmic decision-making, challenging systemic forces that perpetuate racial segregation and economic disadvantage, and enriching legal education with a focus on racial justice.ABOUT THE POSITIONRacial bias and discrimination have historically undermined the integrity of the criminal legal system, contributing significantly to wrongful convictions. Notably, two-thirds of the 254 individuals exonerated by the Innocence Project are people of color, with 58% being Black. Data from the National Registry of Exonerations reveals that Black individuals account for 47% of known exonerations since 1989, despite representing just 13% of the U.S. population. Furthermore, Black individuals are seven times more likely to be wrongfully convicted of murder compared to their white counterparts; a Black person convicted of sexual assault is 3.5 times more likely to be innocent than a white individual in similar circumstances; and innocent Black individuals are 12 times more likely to be wrongfully convicted of drug possession than innocent white individuals. The Innocence Project's work has unveiled systemic biases in prosecution, policing, indigent defense, and forensic science.To further its mission, the (Special) Advisor on Race and Wrongful Conviction will serve as a trusted advisor and thought leader, providing expertise and guidance on matters of racial justice, equity, and bias.
