This position demands a strong ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion while working under the guidance of the Financial Reporting Manager or Director.

ProPublica is an independent nonprofit newsroom focused on investigative journalism that drives public understanding and accountability. The Southwest Reporter will join the team in Phoenix, Arizona, covering major stories across Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, and Utah. This role centers on reporting issues rooted in the Southwest that also carry national relevance. ProPublica’s past investigations in this region have examined federal wildfire preparedness, environmental impacts of grazing, the financial and social costs of the death penalty in Arizona, the destruction of Indigenous human remains, criminalization of homelessness in Albuquerque, and political resistance to solar energy in Utah. Reporters in this position are encouraged to pursue stories about the region’s diverse communities, including those within federally recognized tribes, and to scrutinize state government accountability, especially in Arizona and Utah. What you will do Investigate and report on significant issues affecting the Southwest, with an eye toward stories that can spark change and inform a national audience. Pitch and develop stories that address the challenges and interests of the region’s varied communities. Work both independently and collaboratively with colleagues and partner newsrooms. Requirements At least five years of experience producing investigative stories, ideally with a focus on the Southwest. Clear vision for reporting on the region and its communities. Strong motivation to pursue accountability journalism that is both meaningful and engaging. Experience with a range of reporting techniques, including data analysis and creative approaches to sourcing and storytelling. Ability to balance quick-turn investigations with longer-term projects. Collaborative approach to working with other journalists and organizations.
