About the job
Join us in nurturing the future of veterinary medicine!
At Oakhurst Veterinary Hospital, we are committed to offering veterinary students invaluable off-campus experiences that complement their academic training. Our DVM Student Externship and Preceptorship Program is designed to provide you with hands-on experience in a modern veterinary practice, enhancing your readiness to deliver exceptional care upon graduation.
Program Overview:
Our externship program is flexible, allowing for durations ranging from two to eight weeks based on your academic requirements, with most externships lasting two to three weeks. Externs can expect a varied schedule that includes days, evenings, and weekends.
During your externship, you will have the opportunity to work closely with our experienced veterinary team, practicing your clinical skills in a supportive environment. A weekly stipend of $250 is provided to assist with your expenses.
What You Will Do:
As an extern, you will encounter a diverse caseload typical of a small animal practice. Under the guidance of your mentor, you will gather patient histories, conduct physical examinations, formulate diagnostic and therapeutic plans, assist in surgical procedures, manage medical cases, provide wellness care, and hone your communication and technical skills while documenting your findings accurately.
Candidate Profile:
We are looking for enthusiastic veterinary students who are eager to engage in patient care and uphold the high professional and ethical standards of our practice. Prior to your externship, we recommend familiarizing yourself with the Veterinary Practice Act regarding permissible duties and levels of supervision to ensure a safe and productive experience for all.
As a member of our team, professionalism in appearance and behavior is expected, aligning with the standards set forth in our employee handbook.
