Role Overview webAI seeks a Senior Forward Deployed AI Engineer to support Public Sector initiatives focused on building and improving AI systems for secure, distributed environments. This position blends machine learning, systems engineering, and deployment work, helping move AI research into real-world use. Core work includes transforming prototype models into scalable, reliable production systems that perform well on a range of hardware, from government cloud platforms to edge devices, even in restricted or offline scenarios. Candidates based in Austin, TX or the Washington, D.C./Northern Virginia area are preferred. Fully remote work may be possible in some cases, but those outside Austin could need to travel to headquarters occasionally. Travel up to 25% may be required, including on-site visits for deployment, troubleshooting, and integrating the platform at customer locations. Key Responsibilities Work directly with clients to define, implement, and support AI solutions in production environments. Design, build, and deploy intelligent workflows that enable multi-step reasoning, tool use, and decision-making within production systems. Debug and improve data pipelines and AI systems operating on client networks. Translate complex or ambiguous client needs into clear technical solutions. Contribute across the stack, from running model inference on consumer hardware to automating infrastructure. Review hardware schematics and logs to identify performance bottlenecks and suggest improvements. Serve as a technical advisor to enterprise clients, acting as the external face of the engineering team. Share feedback and insights with internal teams to help refine and improve products.
