About the job
About Quartermaster
At Quartermaster, we are revolutionizing maritime intelligence by eliminating blind spots across the world's oceans. Our innovative approach transforms maritime fleets into a persistent sensing layer, utilizing cutting-edge edge-compute nodes outfitted with high-definition cameras, Software Defined Radios (SDRs), and advanced edge AI processors, all connected through Starlink. We operate in some of the most remote environments on Earth, processing vast quantities of RF and visual data at the edge to provide real-time maritime domain awareness.
The Role
We are seeking a skilled Forward Deployed Infrastructure Engineer to assume responsibility for our sensor fleet once it is installed on a ship. While technicians manage the physical setup, you will oversee the remote configuration, orchestration, and ongoing functionality of these intricate, distributed systems. Your role will be pivotal in establishing the infrastructure that enables a newly installed, offline unit to activate, connect through Starlink, configure its cameras and SDRs, and integrate seamlessly into our global intelligence network.
Your responsibilities will extend beyond cloud server management; you will also troubleshoot remote hardware interfaces, enhance data transmission over satellite networks, and develop automation solutions that ensure our maritime edge remains reliable, even under challenging weather, power, and connectivity conditions.
What You’ll Do
Remote Provisioning & Orchestration: Create and manage low-touch provisioning pipelines that remotely configure edge nodes, establish Starlink connections, and calibrate cameras and SDRs immediately post-installation.
Edge-to-Cloud Infrastructure: Design and maintain the infrastructure connecting our cloud backend (AWS/GCP) with our distributed maritime fleet.
Satcom Network Optimization: Develop resilient networking solutions (VPNs, SD-WAN, Tailscale/Wireguard) to reliably transmit telemetry, heavy video streams, and RF data over variable Starlink maritime connections.
Over-The-Air (OTA) Management: Build secure, robust deployment systems for delivering software updates, AI models, and configuration adjustments to numerous remote nodes without risk of failure.
Remote Troubleshooting: Serve as the primary escalation point for edge node health, independently diagnosing Linux systems, container failures, and hardware-software integration issues from thousands of miles away.
What You Bring
Linux & Systems Expertise: Extensive, hands-on experience with Linux systems and infrastructure management.
