Role overview
The Freelance Research Physicist focuses on creating and validating advanced physics problems for AI systems. Assignments vary, but typically involve:
- Designing original optics-related problems that reflect real-world physics research
- Ensuring problems are computationally demanding and not solvable manually in a short timeframe
- Developing challenges that require complex reasoning across mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, and quantum mechanics
- Basing problems on actual research questions or applications in optics and physics
- Documenting problem statements clearly and providing validated solutions
Requirements
- Degree in Physics (theoretical, experimental, or computational) or a closely related field
- Minimum 2 years of professional experience in research, applied roles, or teaching
- Strong skills in numerical simulation methods
- Ability to design problems mirroring authentic physics research workflows
- Creative approach to problem design across multiple physics areas
- Understanding of physics modeling and approximation techniques
- Excellent written English at C1 level or higher

Time commitment
Most tasks require about 10–20 hours per week during active project phases. Workload may vary depending on project needs and is not guaranteed outside of active assignments.
Compensation
Contributors can earn up to $45 per hour, depending on expertise and pace. Actual rates may vary by project based on scope, complexity, and required skills.
