Mindrift connects subject matter experts with project-based AI work for major technology companies. As a Freelance Research Physicist - AI Systems Trainer, this position is freelance and project-based, not a permanent role.
Role overview
Freelance Research Physicists help shape and test the abilities of AI systems in physics. Project tasks vary, but often include:
- Designing original optics problems modeled after real-world research workflows
- Developing computationally intensive problems that may require extended solution times
- Creating scenarios that require advanced reasoning in mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, and quantum mechanics
- Grounding problems in actual research challenges or practical situations in optics and physics
- Documenting problem statements and providing accurate, verified solutions
Requirements
- Degree in Physics (theoretical, experimental, or computational) or a closely related field
- At least 2 years of relevant experience, which may include research, applied, or teaching roles
- Experience with numerical simulation techniques
- Ability to create problems that reflect authentic research processes in physics
- Creative problem-solving skills across multiple physics specialties
- Knowledge of modeling and approximation methods in physics
- Strong written English skills at C1 level or higher

Time commitment
During active projects, expect to contribute roughly 10–20 hours per week. Actual hours depend on project needs and may fluctuate outside of live project phases.
Compensation
Rates go up to $26 per hour, based on expertise and work pace. Compensation may vary by project complexity and requirements. Other projects on the Mindrift platform may offer different pay rates depending on their needs.
Location
This is a remote, project-based role open to candidates in Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa.
