The School of Professional Studies at Columbia University is seeking seasoned professionals for the position of Adjunct Lecturer to develop and instruct the course Survey and Polling Methodology as part of the M.S. in Political Analytics program.
Course Overview
Survey research has been instrumental in shaping political strategies and public policies for decades. This course will explore the evolution of survey methodologies, particularly the rise of survey experiments in the political landscape since the early 2000s, and their role in gauging public sentiment and predicting electoral outcomes.
Students will delve into the significance of digital platforms and social media in survey implementation and the integration of survey data with available public information. The curriculum will cover foundational principles of survey research, including questionnaire design, sampling techniques, data collection and analysis, as well as the assessment of various sources of error that may impact data quality.
Key Responsibilities
The selected candidate will play a vital role in course development, lead engaging lectures, and facilitate stimulating classroom discussions. Responsibilities include:
- Conducting in-person lectures and instructional activities
- Assessing student performance and providing feedback
- Addressing student inquiries and concerns
- Holding weekly office hours for student support
- Maintaining and enhancing course materials in Canvas, Columbia's learning management system
- Completing mandatory training for Canvas if new to SPS
- Participating in faculty meetings within the Political Analytics department
