JOB CONTEXT:
Since April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, exacerbated by the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). This turmoil has resulted in widespread armed conflict, civilian attacks, mass displacements, malnutrition, epidemics, and climate-related shocks, leaving 30.4 million people—nearly two-thirds of Sudan's population—urgently in need of humanitarian assistance (OCHA, HRP 2025). The crisis has displaced over 12 million individuals, marking it as the largest displacement emergency globally. The situation is particularly critical in regions like Darfur, where approximately 80% of the population requires urgent humanitarian aid.
Since January 2024, HI has been actively responding to the crisis in Sudan. Our collaborative multisectoral approach in Gedaref State, alongside a local partner NGO, is effectively providing physical rehabilitation services in healthcare centers and community settings, as well as mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) services, including both individual and group counseling. Additionally, HI is contributing to humanitarian coordination efforts to ensure disability inclusion is integrated throughout the response.
HI is expanding its operations both geographically and in terms of service modalities. Emergency response teams have been deployed in Darfur to establish operations and initiate responses in the western regions of Sudan, with activities commencing in January 2025 to address basic needs (WASH and Food Security and Livelihoods) while assessments in other sectors are ongoing.
