The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) plays a vital role in the City's progressive criminal justice system, engaging in reform initiatives and strategies designed to transition towards a more compact jail system, all while ensuring public safety is not compromised. The DOC operates various facilities and court commands throughout the five boroughs, supported by over 7,500 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.
The Programming & Community Partnerships division is on the lookout for enthusiastic candidates to fill the role of Associate Correctional Counselor I. The successful candidate will be tasked with providing social services and implementing rehabilitative and behavioral modification programs for adults and young adults who are detained or sentenced within the NYC correctional system. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Engaging daily with justice-involved individuals within designated housing and program areas.
- Monitoring program performance data for justice-involved individuals participating in group or one-on-one sessions.
- Participating in justice-involved council meetings and facilitating group discussions.
- Assisting individuals with incarceration-related requests, transfers, or community reintegration.
- Helping inmates de-escalate conflicts.
- Providing counseling and emotional support to justice-involved individuals through group or individual sessions and referring them to mental health services as needed.
- Conducting interviews to identify issues and collect information for effective case management.
- Collaborating with colleagues to provide insights and recommend adjustments to treatment plans when necessary.
- Offering correctional guidance counseling and referral services.
- Assisting in the planning, facilitation, and monitoring of correctional programs.
- Implementing and enforcing rehabilitative and behavioral modification programs and facility regulations.
- Documenting inmate progress and positive behaviors.
- Attending training sessions and meetings to enhance professional skills and knowledge.
- Encouraging inmates to maintain hygiene and cleanliness in living quarters.
- Performing additional related duties as assigned.
