Salary and Benefits
Newly appointed Border Patrol Agents will earn an annual base salary based on grade level, ranging from GL-5/GL-7 at $51,632 to $92,219 per year. Agents can choose from a comprehensive range of federal employment benefits including health, dental, and other insurance plans, generous annual and sick leave, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan, akin to a traditional ROTH 401(k).
Recruitment Incentive
New hires may receive up to $20,000 in recruitment incentives. The initial $10,000 is awarded following successful completion of the Border Patrol Academy, with an additional $10,000 for selecting prioritized locations.
Retention Incentive
Newly appointed agents may qualify for up to $40,000 in retention incentives over their first four years.
Duty Locations
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Duty assignments may include areas along the Southwest Border, including prioritized locations. USBP determines placements based on operational needs, which may not align with candidate preferences. RELOCATION MAY BE REQUIRED.
Duties and locations can significantly affect pay rates, with locality pay varying by area. A fully trained BPA may earn up to an additional 25% of their base pay as per the BPA Pay Reform Act of 2014. This is a career ladder position with potential for advancement through grade levels from GL-5 up to GS-12.
