The Lead US Publisher will spearhead the Telegraph’s digital publishing operations in the United States, managing an array of content types from live blogs to comprehensive features and commentary.
This role requires close collaboration with the Washington Bureau Chief, American commissioners, and writers, alongside UK colleagues from the Foreign desk, News Publishing, and audience engagement teams. The Lead US Publisher will actively engage with and challenge commissioners, oversee the creation of impactful headlines and visuals, devise strategic publishing plans, and maintain the distinctiveness and quality of all US content produced by the Telegraph.
The position reports to the Head of Publishing in London and involves the management of two US Publishers. Within a dynamic newsroom environment, the Lead US Publisher must adeptly balance diverse content needs, enhance subscriber engagement, and explore opportunities to captivate new audiences.
Key Responsibilities
- Guide US publishers to ensure high-quality content production across all digital platforms and products.
- Work collaboratively with commissioners to ensure articles are targeted and purposeful, presenting innovative ideas and serving as a bridge between commissioning and publishing.
- Ensure articles are published with catchy headlines, well-timed, and presented with engaging copy and visuals.
- Prioritize content for publication or delegate this task as needed.
- Coordinate with commissioners and audience teams to create daily publishing schedules and plans for significant events or issues.
- Analyze performance metrics to gain insights into the Telegraph’s audience and adapt publishing and promotional techniques accordingly, providing feedback to commissioners.
- Collaborate closely with visual editors to commission graphics and assets, and guide publishers in creatively utilizing video and imagery.
- Partner with teams across Homepage & App, Social, SEO, and Community to ensure articles are effectively promoted to the appropriate audiences.
- Foster the development of team members and serve as a mentor to junior publishing colleagues.
