POSITION SUMMARY
The Organ Preservation Coordinator (OPC) plays a vital role in overseeing the intricate processes of organ donor perfusion and preservation. This position involves leading a team of medical professionals during the recovery of solid organs, requiring advanced anatomical knowledge and technical expertise in surgical services. The OPC assists organ recovery surgeons in the meticulous removal of organs from deceased donors, with the understanding that any lapse in duty could result in the loss of viable organs for transplantation.
Collaborating with a variety of high-level professionals, including physicians, hospital administrators, and nursing staff, the OPC serves as the operative authority on the organ recovery process. Key responsibilities include managing the logistics of surgical teams and organ preservation, setting up Operating Room (OR) equipment, effectively documenting intraoperative findings, and maintaining a deep understanding of organ anatomy to facilitate communication with surgeons. Additional core clinical responsibilities are outlined in further detail below.
Each organ donation presents unique and unforeseen challenges that require immediate, innovative problem-solving to ensure successful donations. The OPC must demonstrate exceptional organizational skills and the capacity to adapt quickly to dynamic surgical and logistical issues to preserve the integrity of organ availability and maintain strong relationships with hospitals in our service area.
The OPC also provides consultation to donor hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU) or OR staff, offering expertise to support the wishes of the decedent and their families throughout the donation process.
