Under the supervision of a registered pharmacist, this role involves executing all technical tasks related to the daily operations of the dispensing areas, including functions associated with prescriptions, unit doses, and sterile products. Additionally, you will perform documented manufacturing procedures within the department.
Scheduling:
- This full-time position entails a rotating schedule of 40 hours per week. Shift times may vary based on departmental and patient care requirements. Anticipated rotating shifts include:
- Day shift: Start times between 7 AM and 10 AM
- Swing shift: 12 PM to 8:30 PM
- Evening shift: 2 PM to 10:30 PM
- Weekend Commitment: Required every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday)
- Holiday Commitment: One winter and one summer holiday
- The primary work location is the Prentice 10th pharmacy (cost center 1226), with potential rotation to other pharmacies within Northwestern Memorial Hospital as required.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare medication orders for inpatients and prescriptions for outpatients.
- Collect and deliver medications to nursing units.
- Schedule intravenous admixture solutions according to patient medical records, reporting any discrepancies to a pharmacist.
- Handle incoming calls per hospital policy, determining if calls should be directed to a pharmacist or technician.
- Input new drug orders and renewal/refill information into the computerized patient medication profile.
- Utilize the computer system for all dispensing and inquiry functions.
- Compare patient medication bins with pharmacy and nursing records, returning unnecessary or outdated medications to the pharmacy and reconciling usage records.
- Receive, prepare, and distribute floor stock requisitions and those for other clinical locations.
- Compound dosage forms for patient dispensing.
- Assist in maintaining adequate inventory levels in dispensing areas.
- Package extemporaneous and STAT single doses of medications under the supervision of a pharmacist.
- Prepare and maintain the emergency medication systems.
- Prepare sterile products for patient administration, selecting appropriate diluents and vehicles and determining stability.
