Required Qualifications:Currently pursuing a BS, MS, or PhD in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field.Hands-on lab experience in at least one of the following areas: thin film/coatings, nanoparticle dispersions, microfabrication, printing/dispensing, or device assembly.Exceptional attention to detail and strong adherence to experimental hygiene (clean handling, contamination control, thorough documentation).Availability to work 100% onsite in Sunnyvale, CA for a minimum duration of 6 months.Excellent communication and teamwork abilities; capable of working independently with minimal guidance.A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.Desired Qualifications:Experience with inkjet, piezo dispensing, microarray spotting, or other precision deposition tools.
About the job
Bosch Research is on the lookout for a driven intern to assist in the development of innovative printed metal-oxide (MOx) sensing materials for gas detection applications. In this role, you will play a key part in establishing an efficient fabrication workflow that integrates piezo dispensing and inkjet printing techniques with wire bonding and packaging methodologies tailored for compact MEMS-based sensor substrates.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Operating and refining procedures for the deposition of MOx inks on small substrates and MEMS chips using piezo or inkjet methods.
- Collaborating with partners from UC Berkeley to optimize ink formulations, focusing on aspects such as solvent/binder/dispersant ratios, solids loading, filtration, and stability.
- Documenting and developing printing process parameters, including patterning techniques, drop spacing, number of passes, substrate mounting strategies, drying and curing processes, and inspection/QC measures.
- Executing and documenting wire bonding processes for printed sensor substrates, including setup, parameter adjustments, yield tracking, and basic failure analysis.
- Coordinating experimental logistics for occasional work at Stanford (SNF) and UC Berkeley, including tool access, sample transport, and on-site runs as required.
- Maintaining organized experimental records and producing clear runbooks (SOP-style documentation) to enhance reproducibility.
This internship prioritizes hands-on laboratory work, process development, and teamwork across both academic and industrial environments.
