As a Swine Farm Supervisor, you will play a pivotal role in overseeing the daily operations of the breeding and gestation unit, ensuring the health, productivity, and welfare of our swine herd. Your leadership will guide a team of farm staff in implementing best management practices while maintaining high standards of animal husbandry, biosecurity, and welfare. This position also entails assisting with various administrative and operational tasks.
Key Responsibilities:
UNIT: BREEDING & GESTATION
- Develop, monitor, and assess the farm's genetic program, utilizing analyses to ensure optimal herd performance.
- Provide recommendations for program enhancements based on performance feedback from both internal and external stakeholders.
- Oversee proper execution of the genetic program and maintain accurate breeder profiles and records using swine management software.
- Manage heat detection, artificial insemination, and gestation protocols, ensuring compliance with established SOPs.
- Supervise the health and nutrition of pregnant sows throughout gestation.
- Conduct routine health checks and address any gestational complications or health issues.
- Ensure comfortable housing conditions to minimize stress and promote well-being.
- Achieve and surpass production performance targets through effective management.
- Keep comprehensive breeding records to support analysis and reporting.
- Recommend and implement improvements to existing breeding practices.
- Monitor barn conditions—temperature, humidity, and ventilation—to ensure a healthy environment.
- Establish and uphold cleaning protocols to prevent disease outbreaks.
- Ensure all barn equipment, including feeders and environmental controls, are functioning correctly.
- Adjust environmental conditions as necessary to promote the health of the sows.
- Implement environmental enrichment strategies to enhance animal welfare.
- Coordinate with maintenance teams to ensure the breeding and gestation facilities are well-kept.
- Prepare and manage budgets to maintain unit operations within financial limits.
