Job Summary:
The Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health is in search of a dynamic and innovative leader to take on the role of Vice Dean for Strategic Communications. This pivotal position reports directly to the Dean of the Faculty and is integral to the senior leadership team, acting as the chief strategist for communications within the School. The Vice Dean will be a trusted advisor to the Dean and other senior leaders, influencing the School's institutional positioning, reputation, and public engagement initiatives.
This candidate will embody a thoughtful, values-driven approach, merging strategic foresight with operational excellence. They will maintain a composed and credible presence during uncertain times and will collaborate effectively, respecting academic culture while enhancing clarity, relevance, and impact in the field of public health. Leading a talented, multidisciplinary communications team, the Vice Dean will spearhead the School's communications strategy, standards, and priorities, aligning with the Dean’s vision for a forward-thinking institution that addresses global health needs.
Collaborating closely with faculty, researchers, students, and staff, the Vice Dean will articulate and champion a compelling institutional narrative that underscores Harvard Chan’s leadership in research, education, and public purpose. This role will also work in tandem with Harvard University’s central communications office (Harvard Public Affairs and Communications) to ensure consistent and coordinated communications efforts across both the School and the wider University.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and execute a comprehensive strategic communications plan that aligns with the Dean’s vision, the School’s mission, and overarching institutional goals.
- Act as the chief communications strategist, establishing standards and frameworks across diverse platforms and audiences.
- Lead and nurture a high-performing communications team of 20 personnel, overseeing digital and social media, website management, media relations, design, content creation, and a multimedia studio; directly manage 7 staff members.
- Serve as a principal advisor to the Dean and senior leadership, particularly during pivotal moments for the institution, providing guidance on communications strategy, reputation management, and public positioning.
- Cultivate a distinct institutional voice that reflects the School’s intellectual credibility, core values, and global influence in public health.
- Enhance the School’s capacity for effective communication in complex and rapidly changing environments.
