About the job
WHAT IS THE ROLE?
This position is based on-site near Whitecourt, Alberta, with a vehicle provided for transportation.
As a Supervisor for the Outland Youth Employment Program (OYEP), you will oversee the safety, well-being, and supervision of youth and staff throughout the program's duration. This live-in leadership role involves managing an entire cohort during the summer program, which takes place in a remote, land-based setting featuring rustic cabin-style accommodations and shared facilities. Adaptability, maturity, and comfort in communal living are essential.
Supervisors are tasked with providing consistent, supportive supervision and guidance to both staff and participants. You will assist with inquiries, problem-solving, and various situations that may arise. Key responsibilities include maintaining a safe, structured environment, ensuring adherence to the program schedule, making final decisions on disciplinary matters, and clarifying roles and behavioral expectations for all involved.
Additionally, Supervisors play a vital role in supporting youth development by coaching participants on workplace expectations, conflict resolution, and personal growth. Many participants will be experiencing their first job and receiving their first paycheck; thus, Supervisors are critical in modeling professionalism, accountability, and workplace readiness.
Moreover, you must exemplify a positive, professional demeanor at all times and support culturally respectful practices at the site, collaborating with community partners, Elders, and Knowledge Keepers as applicable. This includes facilitating culturally grounded activities and ceremonies as guided by community leadership.
Supervisors will work closely with the Operations Manager to ensure safety and quality in programming throughout the summer.
Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Providing active oversight and assistance in all work projects and classroom sessions to ensure safety, productivity, and achievement of learning objectives.
- Maintaining and enforcing Outland’s workplace health and safety regulations and emergency response procedures.
- Reporting near misses, hazards, and safety incidents promptly.
- Leading incident management and supporting emergency responses as necessary.
- Monitoring staff and Rangers’ adherence to safe operating procedures and PPE compliance.
Vehicle & Equipment Safety
- Ensuring the safe operation and supervision of all program vehicles, boats, tools, and equipment.
- Maintaining awareness of vehicle and equipment maintenance requirements and promptly reporting any deficiencies.
