Role overview
This freelance position with toloka-ai (via Mindrift) connects material scientists to project-based AI work for leading technology companies. The main focus is evaluating and improving AI systems. Assignments are temporary and do not constitute permanent employment.
What you will do
- Design materials engineering problems that mirror real-world workflows
- Create challenges requiring Python programming for engineering calculations and simulations
- Develop computationally intensive problems using numerical methods or iterative approaches
- Build tasks involving system design, optimization, and analysis
- Base challenges on research questions or practical engineering scenarios
- Validate solutions using Python and standard engineering libraries
- Document problem statements clearly and provide verified answers
Requirements
- Degree in Material Science or a closely related field
- Proficiency in Python for numerical validation; experience with MATLAB, R, C, SQL, Numpy, Pandas, SciPy, or similar tools is a plus
- At least 2 years of professional experience (applied, research, or teaching)
- Solid understanding of practical engineering constraints and approximations
- Excellent written English (C1 level or higher)

Time commitment
Active project phases usually require 10–20 hours per week. Actual hours depend on current project needs and are not guaranteed outside of active assignments.
Compensation
Earn up to $45 per hour, depending on experience and the rate of task completion. Pay may vary by project scope, complexity, and required expertise. Other projects may offer different rates based on their specific requirements.
