This freelance, project-based role connects mathematics experts with Python skills to AI training initiatives for toloka-ai. Work is remote, based in Porto, Portugal, and assignments are not permanent positions.
Role overview
Projects involve designing and validating advanced computational mathematics problems that reflect real mathematical research and practical applications. Contributors may:
- Create original math problems that mirror authentic research workflows
- Develop problems requiring Python programming to solve, often using Numpy, SciPy, or Sympy
- Ensure problems are computationally intensive, beyond manual solution within days or weeks
- Design tasks involving reasoning in number theory, combinatorics, graph theory, and numerical analysis
- Base problems on real research challenges or practical mathematical scenarios
- Validate solutions in Python with established mathematical libraries
- Document problem statements and provide verified, correct answers
Requirements
- Degree in Mathematics (Pure or Applied) or a related field
- Proficiency in Python for numerical validation; familiarity with MATLAB, R, C, SQL, Numpy, Pandas, SciPy, Stata, or similar tools is also acceptable
- At least 2 years of professional experience (applied, research, or teaching)
- Experience with numerical methods and symbolic computation
- Ability to design problems that reflect genuine mathematical research workflows
- Understanding of computational complexity theory
- Strong written English skills (C1 level or higher)

Workload and compensation
Project workload is estimated at 10–20 hours per week during active phases, depending on requirements. This is an estimate and not a guaranteed number of hours. Compensation can reach up to $29 per hour equivalent, based on contribution level and pace. Actual rates may vary by project scope, complexity, and expertise required. Other projects on the platform may offer different earning levels depending on their needs.
