Qualifications

Must be able to obtain and maintain a U. S. DOE Q-level security clearance, requiring U. S. Citizenship. Associate degree in Mechanical or Electro-Mechanical Drafting; or a relevant degree with significant coursework in science, mathematics, electronics, and engineering, along with related experience; or a Certificate in Engineering Technology, Mechanical or Electronic Drafting with relevant experience; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these qualifications. Intermediate knowledge of drafting standards, procedures, and techniques, including familiarity with ASME Y14.5M Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing Standards. Ability to solve moderately complex technical problems. Intermediate understanding of the functions, fabrication, processes, and packaging of electronic systems and/or mechanical hardware. Proficient in reading and interpreting engineering notes, sketches, drawings, specifications, and procedures. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

We are looking for enthusiastic Mechanical and/or Electro-Mechanical Design Drafters or Designers to join our team at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in Livermore, CA. This role is crucial in supporting both new and ongoing experiments and facilities across various programs at LLNL’s Site 200. You will engage in design and drafting tasks that encompass electronic and mechanical design, as well as the management of drawings and data for intricate control and diagnostic systems and subsystems. Your contributions will be pivotal to selected programs focused on Modernization, Modification, or Stockpile Systems, operating within the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED) and the Weapon Technologies and Engineering (WTE) Program, under the Strategic Deterrence (SD) directorate.

This position necessitates full-time, on-site presence due to the specialized nature of the work involved.

We have openings at various experience levels, determined by your knowledge and related experience as assessed by our hiring team. Additional responsibilities (as detailed below) may be assigned if you are hired at a higher level.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Deliver mechanical or electro-mechanical drafting and design support to lead designers, engineering teams, and scientific staff, utilizing CAD tools where design parameters and specifications are defined.
  • Conduct basic calculations to aid technical tasks using established engineering formulas.
  • Utilize database management software to process drawings and technical information.
  • Maintain comprehensive systems documentation and experimental records.
  • Produce graphics and technical materials to support design reviews, procedures, and other documentation.
  • Review completed drawings for compliance with LLNL drafting standards and specifications.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

Additional Responsibilities at the 534.3 Level:

  • Provide advanced mechanical or electro-mechanical design and drafting support where overall design parameters and specifications have been established.
  • Contribute to preliminary design concepts for hardware, components, and systems, making independent judgments and decisions.
  • Estimate schedules and costs to determine effective methods in design, materials, and time to meet project deliverables, and prepare and present technical materials for design reviews, procedures, and related documentation.
