ABOUT THE ROLE

Join the dynamic team at gem-technologies, where we are looking for a dedicated Mechanical Engineer to support the operations at the esteemed Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. This full-time position offers the opportunity to contribute to critical engineering projects within a leading research facility.

Key Responsibilities

  • Utilize your engineering skills to enhance the operations of the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR).

  • Design and develop engineering solutions for new installations, as well as upgrades and replacements of HFIR structures, systems, and components (SSCs).

  • Conduct detailed calculations and analyses to comply with design specifications and requirements.

  • Implement relevant industry codes and standards, including ASTM, ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, ASME B31 piping codes, NQA-1, and AWS.

  • Assist in the development of plans for reactor core component replacements.

  • Draft design specifications and establish acceptance criteria for component upgrades.

  • Revise material specifications and offer technical support for material sourcing.

  • Execute modifications in line with RRD configuration control protocols.

Qualifications

  • Education & Experience – A Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or a related field, combined with a minimum of 10 years of experience in Department of Energy (DOE) nuclear facilities and/or commercial nuclear plants.

  • Citizenship RequirementOnly U. S. citizens will be considered due to the federal nature of this role.

  • Security Clearance – Candidates must be eligible to obtain and maintain a government-issued clearance if required.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in engineering design and manufacturing practices, including welding, joining techniques, and machine design.

  • Understanding of DOE Orders and Standards (e.g., DOE O 420.1C, DOE STD 1189, DOE STD-1073 2016).

  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical design drawings and apply GD&T principles (ASME Y14.5).

  • Experience in configuration management and engineering change control processes within a nuclear environment.

Preferred Skills

  • Familiarity with AutoPIPE and finite element analysis is advantageous.
