Our team comprises dedicated scientists and engineers collaborating closely to define the engineering requirements essential for these future technologies. As a Mechanical Engineering Intern, you will engage in diverse projects, ranging from the design of innovative benchtop experimental setups for testing the next evolution of implants. Ideal candidates will be adaptable, applying both their technical and creative abilities to solve multifaceted problems while demonstrating a strong sense of urgency.

Job Description and Responsibilities:

In your role as a Mechanical Engineering Intern, you will design and construct versatile benchtop testing setups to evaluate advanced brain-computer interface (BCI) implants. These systems will facilitate rapid algorithm iterations and comprehensive system-level validations. You will work closely with the Next Gen team to outline requirements and implement best practices for scalable, reusable testing hardware. Your specific responsibilities will include:

  • Designing and building custom benchtop fixtures and electrical/mechanical assemblies to test implant prototypes and associated hardware.
  • Developing setups that replicate neural environments, including spiking-activity emulators, saline or tissue-like baths, and controlled noise sources to simulate in-vivo signal conditions.
  • Establishing and documenting standard operating procedures (SOPs) for assembly, calibration, and routine testing to guarantee repeatability and reliability.
  • Integrating electrical and mechanical components to enable algorithm development, automated data collection, and noise characterization.
  • Collaborating across disciplines to translate experimental requirements into robust solutions.
  • Iterating and generalizing test platforms for future implant designs and evolving experimental needs.
