Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work across diverse teams.

About the job

Red 6 is a pioneering startup in the realm of Augmented Reality (AR), specializing in advanced synthetic air combat training solutions. Our flagship technology underpins the ATARS product, allowing pilots to experience realistic and scalable training scenarios that replicate the cognitive challenges of flying in diverse outdoor environments.

Role Overview

As a Reliability Engineer, you will take charge of the reliability strategy and execution for Red 6’s Head-Mounted Display (HMD) known as EVE and its associated electronics, guiding the process from initial design to production and ongoing fleet support. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams including optical, electrical, firmware, systems, test/flight-test, manufacturing, and supply-chain to establish reliability targets, integrate reliability into design, validate products against aerospace-grade standards, and foster continuous improvement in reliability metrics.

Your Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement the reliability program for the HMD and electronics, including requirements allocation, reliability plans, testing strategies, qualification matrices, and acceptance criteria.

  • Lead Design for Reliability (DfR) initiatives, such as component derating, parts selection, thermal and stress analysis, worst-case analysis, and conduct DFMEAs/PFMEAs, FTA, RBDs, and reliability predictions (e.g., MIL-HDBK-217, Telcordia) as needed.

  • Plan and carry out testing throughout development and production phases, including HALT/HASS, ESS, accelerated life testing (e.g., Arrhenius/Coffin-Manson methods), and environmental/EMI compliance testing in accordance with aerospace standards (e.g., MIL-STD-810, DO-160, MIL-STD-461) in partnership with internal and external laboratories.

  • Establish and manage a Failure Reporting, Analysis, and Corrective Action System (FRACAS): collect and analyze data, classify failures, conduct root cause analysis (utilizing methodologies such as 8D/5-Why), and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).

  • Analyze reliability data using methods like Weibull analysis and parametric life data, as well as growth modeling techniques (e.g., Duane/AMSAA), and develop dashboards to monitor MTBF/FIT, reliability growth, and field return trends.

  • Collaborate with flight-test and field teams to strategize test coverage, instrument prototypes, and translate real-world usage into reliability loads and duty cycles for the HMD system.

  • Engage with suppliers and manufacturing: define reliability requirements for critical components (microdisplays, emitters/LEDs/lasers, image sensors, IMUs, power electronics, connectors/harness, optics assemblies/adhesives); review supplier evidence (screening, burn-in, PPAP/AS9145 artifacts), and guide incoming/ESS strategies.

  • Ensure alignment with quality systems and standards to maintain high levels of product reliability and performance.

About Red 6
