About the job
The AI AML Engineering Squad at SumUp works at the intersection of machine learning and financial crime prevention. The team builds data products and machine learning systems that help keep SumUp's transaction monitoring effective and compliant in 37 countries. Senior Data Scientists here oversee the models, pipelines, and risk scoring that flag and escalate suspicious activities, always with a focus on regulatory standards.
What You Will Do
- Develop, maintain, and improve machine learning models and batch training pipelines for anti-money laundering (AML) transaction monitoring, focusing on detection accuracy, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance.
- Design and engineer features for the Feature Store, using AML typologies and suspicious behavior patterns. Work closely with AML investigators to turn domain knowledge into alerting logic and set thresholds.
- Run sensitivity analyses on synthetic datasets. Prepare governance materials like model cards and ensure documentation meets audit standards.
- Own the AML Risk Score: analyze what drives it, monitor changes, conduct back-testing, and suggest improvements to features, logic, and thresholds.
- Work with AML Operations, Product, and Engineering teams to turn stakeholder needs into practical, scalable data science solutions.
- Track and improve detection performance metrics, adjust solutions for regional compliance, and contribute to system design documentation.
What We Look For
- Advanced Python skills, including hands-on data engineering experience and a background in building production-ready machine learning workflows.
- Expertise in feature engineering and unsupervised machine learning. Ability to translate domain knowledge into model behaviors and alerting logic.
- Experience deploying machine learning applications and managing end-to-end pipelines (monitoring, versioning, rollback), especially in regulated settings.
