About the job

About Us

Kettle is an innovative Managing General Agency (MGA) that focuses on wildfire insurance, leveraging advanced underwriting technology alongside extensive industry expertise.

Position Overview

We are on the lookout for a Senior Full-Stack Software Engineer with robust DevOps experience and front-end expertise to join our dynamic engineering team. In this hands-on role, you will be tasked with architecting, building, and maintaining core systems within our AWS-based stack. You will contribute to front-end product development and play a crucial role in scaling Kettle's engineering infrastructure as we expand. Your responsibilities will begin with direct contributions to system improvements, with increased scope and ownership as you acclimate.

Collaboration will be key, as you will work closely with data engineering, modeling, risk, and product teams to deliver performant, reliable, and secure systems that underpin our underwriting platform and geospatial analytics tools.

Why This Role Exists

As Kettle expands, our engineering systems are becoming integral to underwriting, mapping, and data science workflows. Our small, senior engineering team boasts strong backend and modeling capabilities, and we seek to enhance our infrastructure, DevOps practices, and front-end tools to better support a scaling platform. While our current systems perform effectively, increasing usage necessitates improvements in deployment reliability, observability, infrastructure consistency, and the overall developer experience. This role is designed to proactively strengthen our foundations to meet future demands.

We are looking for a seasoned engineer capable of enhancing the reliability, scalability, and developer experience of our AWS-based platform while also contributing to the internal tools and interfaces utilized daily by our underwriting and risk teams. This engineer should possess a product-centric mindset and be comfortable navigating the entire stack, with primary strengths in infrastructure, followed by front-end tools and backend systems. You will have significant autonomy in shaping our deployment, monitoring, and systems evolution, playing a vital role in elevating our engineering standards as we grow.

What Success Looks Like

Within the First 6 Months, You Will:

  • Enhance observability, monitoring, and deployment reliability.
  • Deliver valuable improvements to internal dashboards and underwriting tools.
  • Establish yourself as a key collaborator with data engineering and modeling teams to ensure system reliability.

By the End of 12 Months, You Will:

  • Significantly advance our DevOps posture and developer workflows.
  • Become a trusted advisor for infrastructure and architectural decisions.
  • Contribute to the deployment and support strategies of new underwriting and mapping products.
  • Uplift the engineering standards across backend, infrastructure, and internal tooling domains.
