About Us
The IT Operations team at the University of the West of England is dedicated to managing our extensive infrastructure, ensuring seamless functionality from desktop systems to data centers. Our responsibilities encompass a diverse array of technologies, including but not limited to datacenter utilities like power and air conditioning, networking solutions from Juniper and Cisco, storage systems like SAN and NAS, backup solutions, cloud storage, hypervisors such as VMware and Hyper-V, and operating systems across various platforms including Linux, Solaris, Windows, and macOS.
Our infrastructure spans two primary data centers and multiple university sites, including the UWE Gloucester campus, supporting approximately 7,000 desktops, over 800 servers, and handling around 5 million emails monthly across 71,000 user accounts.
We are committed to maintaining high-performance operational systems, providing a digitally agile and technologically advanced environment for our students, staff, and partners. Our team is accountable for the operation and maintenance of existing systems, ensuring that new services and major infrastructure initiatives are operationally effective and sustainable.
About the Role
In the role of Senior IT Systems Engineer, you will leverage your technical expertise to provide operational support and project-based development across a variety of IT systems. As a senior member of our team, you will oversee the implementation, ongoing maintenance, and support of IT systems as well as business applications.
Key projects you will engage with include:
- Transitioning services to Azure
- Migrating Skype for Business to Microsoft Teams (with Direct Routing)
- Updating IT systems and Windows servers to their latest iterations
- Enhancing automation capabilities using Power Automate and DevOps tools like Ansible and Git
About You
The ideal candidate will possess hands-on experience with many of the following technologies:
- Windows Server Operating Systems and other Microsoft products (e.g., Active Directory, Skype for Business)
- Microsoft 365 applications (e.g., Exchange, Intune, Azure AD, SharePoint)
- Microsoft Teams (including voice), contact center systems, or cloud telephony
- Cloud infrastructure (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS)
- VMware and other virtualization platforms
- PowerShell scripting
Experience with Agile project management methodologies and collaboration tools, as well as a strong desire to transition services from on-premises to cloud solutions, will be highly regarded.
