Qualifications
Your Role:As a Senior Mechanical Engineer specializing in diagnostics within our Science team, you will play a critical role in the design and development of innovative diagnostic instrumentation that aligns with our fusion energy goals. This position combines mechanical design, prototyping, and scientific inquiry, allowing you to turn initial ideas into durable mechanical systems that facilitate advanced plasma diagnostics and research. This is an on-site role located in our Everett, WA office, reporting to the Director of Experimental Science. Your Responsibilities:Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams of scientists, engineers, and product designers to create cutting-edge mechanical solutions for experimental diagnostic devices. Take ownership of the mechanical design of diagnostic systems, including defining and refining requirements, troubleshooting hardware challenges, and fostering continuous improvements. Utilize CAD tools (e.g., NX, SolidWorks) to design, prototype, and iterate mechanical components and assemblies; perform structural and thermal analyses (e.g., ANSYS); and lead design reviews. Conduct experimental testing, gather and analyze performance data, and assist in root-cause analyses of mechanical failures or performance deviations. Leverage insights from previous designs to innovate hardware and integrate your solutions into ongoing fusion research experiments. Continuously enhance your skills and domain knowledge by engaging with Helion’s resources and expertise.
About the job
Join Helion Energy
At Helion Energy, we are at the forefront of fusion power technology, based in Everett, WA. Our mission is to construct the world's first fusion power plant, paving the way for an era of limitless clean electricity. We envision a world where energy is clean, reliable, and affordable for all.
Since our inception in 2013, we have successfully secured over $1 billion in funding from notable investors, including Sam Altman, Mithril, Capricorn Investment Group, SoftBank, and Lightspeed. Our latest prototype, Trenta, has achieved remarkable milestones, including 10,000 high-power pulses and plasma temperatures of 100 million degrees Celsius (9 keV). We are currently advancing our next prototype, Polaris, on our journey to establish the first fusion power plant.
This is an exciting time to become part of the Helion team. You will address complex challenges alongside a dedicated group that values urgency, rigor, ownership, and transparency—principles essential for pioneering new energy solutions. Together, we are poised to transform the future of energy, because the world cannot wait.
