About the job

About Matter Intelligence

At Matter Intelligence, we are pioneering the future of vision AI by integrating a groundbreaking sensor capable of interpreting molecular chemistry, temperature, and 3D shape with a Large World Model that serves as the most advanced intelligence engine for understanding the physical world. Our innovation goes beyond mere imagery; it comprehensively analyzes data from a single pixel, which we refer to as Superintelligent Vision.

Our team is a powerhouse of expertise, having delivered cutting-edge technologies to Mars for NASA/JPL, developed sophisticated sensors for U. S. defense, and constructed foundational infrastructure at OpenAI. We are now venturing into the development of next-generation sensing systems for both space and airborne applications.

About the Role

We are on the lookout for a Senior Optical Systems Engineer who will take charge of the holistic optical performance of intricate electro-optical payloads, overseeing all phases from initial concept and system trades to design, integration, testing, and, where relevant, on-orbit or airborne operations.

In this pivotal role, you will serve as the technical authority for optical system performance, adeptly converting mission objectives into optical specifications, guiding the implementation of designs, verifying performance both analytically and experimentally, and facilitating calibration and operations.

Collaboration will be key, as you'll engage closely with systems engineering, optomechanical, thermal, electronics, AI&T, and data teams, along with external suppliers and partners.

Key Responsibilities

Optical System Architecture & Trades

  • Define and take ownership of optical system architectures for both spaceborne and airborne remote-sensing payloads.

  • Translate mission objectives into precise optical requirements, including resolution, SNR, spectral performance, and stability.

  • Lead comprehensive system-level optical trades regarding aperture, altitude, field of view, spectral bandpass, and detector selection.

  • Support mission-level performance modeling, encompassing radiometric, geometric, and image-quality budgets.

Optical Performance Analysis

  • Create and maintain thorough optical performance models.

  • Conduct and review analyses including:

  • Radiometry and SNR assessments

  • MTF and image quality evaluations

  • Spectral response and bandpass performance evaluations

  • Sensitivity analyses related to alignment, thermal effects, and structural variations.

About Matter Intelligence

Matter Intelligence is at the forefront of vision AI innovation, crafting solutions that redefine how we perceive and interact with the physical world. Our team is renowned for its groundbreaking contributions to space technology and advanced sensor development, striving to push the boundaries of what is possible in sensing systems.
