About the job

About Matter Intelligence

At Matter, we are pioneering the future of vision AI by integrating a groundbreaking sensor capable of perceiving molecular chemistry, temperature, and 3D shape, with a Large World Model that serves as the most powerful intelligence engine for understanding the physical world. Our innovative system not only captures visual information but also comprehends the intricate details derived from a single pixel, a concept we refer to as Superintelligent Vision.

Our accomplished team has previously delivered technologies to Mars for NASA/JPL, designed advanced sensors for U. S. defense applications, and constructed core infrastructure at OpenAI. We are now embarking on the development of next-generation sensing systems for both space and airborne platforms.

About the Role

We are on the lookout for a Senior Optomechanical Engineer to spearhead the design, analysis, integration, and qualification of high-performance optical payloads suitable for space and airborne applications. This position will entail ownership of the optomechanical architecture and manufacturing readiness of Matter’s imaging systems, guiding them from initial concept through to flight hardware.

You will advocate for optomechanical design across various programs, ensuring that optical performance is maintained under structural, thermal, and dynamic environments (STOP). Collaboration will be key as you work closely with optical engineering, systems engineering, thermal, structures, and manufacturing teams, and engage hands-on with flight and test hardware.

Key Responsibilities

Optomechanical Architecture & Design

  • Lead the optomechanical design of precision optical assemblies, subsystems, and payloads tailored for space-qualified remote-sensing systems.

  • Define mechanical architectures for optical mounts, structures, mechanisms, and interfaces that ensure alignment and performance during launch and in-orbit conditions.

  • Translate optical sensitivities and requirements into mechanical, thermal, and manufacturing specifications.

  • Drive the development of concepts, detailed designs, and ensure design maturity through all review phases.

STOP Analysis & Performance Assurance

  • Own the optomechanical performance across Structural, Thermal, and Optical Performance (STOP) domains.

  • Conduct and review tolerance analyses, GD&T, structural FEA, thermal, and thermo-elastic evaluations.

  • Collaborate with optical engineers to assist in optical modeling and maintain error budgets.

  • Ensure that all designs meet the rigorous standards required for success in aerospace environments.

About Matter Intelligence

Matter Intelligence is at the forefront of vision AI innovation, committed to crafting groundbreaking technologies that reshape our understanding of the physical world. Our mission to develop advanced sensing systems is driven by a talented team with a proven track record in delivering high-stakes technology to prominent organizations such as NASA and OpenAI.
