About the job
Senior R&D Engineer (Mechatronics & Hardware)
Location: Darmstadt
Position Type: Full-time
About Focused Energy
Focused Energy stands at the forefront of innovation in laser-driven fusion technology, leading the charge towards the realization of clean, limitless energy. Our headquarters in Darmstadt, Germany, along with our presence in the San Francisco Bay Area, brings together a team of exceptional scientists and engineers dedicated to harnessing proven technologies for commercial-scale fusion power.
We are not only committed to developing transformative energy solutions for the long term but are also addressing immediate global challenges. Our groundbreaking initiative, SourceLight, is focused on creating compact, laser-driven radiation sources (LDRS). These innovative dual-mode systems produce MeV X-rays and fast neutrons, facilitating real-time, non-destructive inspection of complex or shielded materials. This technology plays a critical role in nuclear waste management, contraband detection, infrastructure assessments, and medical isotope production.
As a member of our dynamic, interdisciplinary team comprising laser and plasma physicists, engineers, and AI specialists, you will contribute to the development of our first pilot facility in Biblis, Germany. Join us in shaping this advanced technology venture from its inception!
Your Mission
In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for designing critical components of our laser-driven radiation source, taking ownership of a vital R&D sector. You will act as a bridge between scientific concepts and industrial applications, significantly influencing a technology that has the potential to revolutionize various industries.
Key Responsibilities:
System Ownership: Lead the development lifecycle of complex electro-mechanical modules, converting high-level physics requirements into detailed, manufacturable specifications, and ensuring a seamless transition from prototype to production.
Engineering for Challenging Environments: Design and validate hardware capable of sustained operation in high-vacuum (1e-5 mBar) environments, under significant electromagnetic and thermal stresses, and in radiation-rich contexts.
Rapid Prototyping: Actively engage in the hands-on construction, testing, troubleshooting, and enhancement of hardware, both in our lab and during external beamtime campaigns.
