About the job

Black Canyon Consulting (BCC) is on the lookout for a Senior Software Developer specializing in Bioinformatics and Big Data. This role will contribute to our projects for the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) at the National Library of Medicine (NLM), part of the National Institutes of Health. This position is full-time and can be performed onsite at the NIH-NCBI in Bethesda, MD, or potentially remotely.

The NCBI, recognized as the nation's leading biomedical resource, is in need of a software developer to enhance biological sequence annotation and data curation infrastructure for the country's top sequence and biomedical literature repositories. With four million daily users accessing gene sequence data, biomedical journal citations, and various other crucial information impacting biomedical research and public health, our work is pivotal. NCBI’s annotation pipelines not only serve a multitude of expert communities but also drive groundbreaking discoveries in life sciences, covering medical health issues (viruses, pandemics, genetic diseases, cancer), public health (food safety, antimicrobial resistance), and essential research topics in computational biology and bioinformatics.

Technically, NCBI’s diverse applications and platforms, including Node, Python, Django, and C++, manage petabyte-scale big data across multiple cloud providers, serving more users than the US Postal Service and experiencing more traffic than the IRS during tax season. We uphold the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) and are at the forefront of civic technology and cloud computing.

This role requires more than just coding expertise; we seek an individual who can collaborate effectively with subject-matter experts, user researchers, designers, product managers, scientists, security and DevOps engineers, among others. You will work alongside committed teams of skilled developers, researchers, and product professionals to create robust, adaptable solutions for numerous production applications, APIs, and services. Join our team!

We offer a competitive benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision coverage, a 401k plan with employer contributions, paid holidays, vacation, and tuition reimbursement. If you thrive in a high-performing, professionally driven service and technology organization, we invite you to apply today!
