PROGRAM AND JOB DESCRIPTION:The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's Division of Environmental Health is dedicated to safeguarding public health by preventing and controlling illnesses and injuries associated with environmental and occupational health risks. This is achieved through extensive outreach, education, surveillance, and enforcement. With a robust team of 1,000 professionals, the Division addresses a diverse array of health topics, including environmental investigations, lead poisoning prevention, injury prevention, occupational health, food safety, childcare, radiation control, water quality (both recreational and drinking), air quality, climate health, vector control, veterinary public health, and pest management.PROGRAM: The Bureau of Food Safety and Community Sanitation (BFSCS) plays a vital role in protecting the health of all New Yorkers, particularly the most vulnerable populations, from various health hazards. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is responsible for conducting inspections of approximately 26,000 restaurants annually, along with school cafeterias, mobile food vending units, adult day care centers, senior centers, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, and other establishments.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:- Conducting regular inspections of commercial and social service establishments.- Enforcing regulations under the Smoke-Free Air Act and Tobacco Product Regulation Act.- Reviewing menus and menu boards to ensure compliance with nutritional guidelines aimed at combating chronic diseases and obesity.- Documenting inspection findings using handheld devices and issuing court summonses for violations of applicable laws and regulations.- Upholding anti-corruption control policies.- Providing testimony at the Office of Trials and Hearings, as well as in other court settings when necessary.Inspectors will travel throughout the five boroughs utilizing public transportation.
