Key ResponsibilitiesContribute to the development of Rivian's steer-by-wire feature specifications and offer guidance on functional safety during the design of SbW systems and components. Conduct comprehensive safety analyses at both vehicle and component levels for SbW subsystems. Document functional safety requirements in the requirements tool, ensuring traceability and quality across the SbW safety framework. Create test case specifications for functional safety requirements of steer-by-wire systems, encompassing hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and vehicle-level validation scenarios. Assist in bench and HIL testing, as well as system and vehicle validation of functional safety requirements associated with SbW actuators, control units, and redundancy pathways.

Role overview

The Senior Functional Safety Engineer works within the Propulsion and Dynamics group, specializing in Steer-by-Wire (SbW) systems. The position is responsible for applying the ISO 26262 standard throughout the development process, ensuring that SbW solutions meet strict safety requirements from initial concept through final validation.

What you will do

  • Develop and apply safety concepts for Steer-by-Wire components such as Road Wheel Actuator (RWA), Handwheel Actuator (HWA), Force Feedback Actuator (FFA), zonal controllers, and redundancy strategies.
  • Lead the functional safety lifecycle for the RWA, overseeing progress from design through validation.
  • Analyze subsystem safety architectures and review safety analyses, test plans, and test outcomes.
  • Carry out fault insertion testing on SbW systems to verify the effectiveness of safety mechanisms.
  • Serve as a technical resource and main contact for engineering teams on functional safety matters.
  • Conduct independent peer reviews to confirm compliance with functional safety standards.
