About the job
Join Our Team as a Senior Functional Safety Engineer for Humanoid Robotics
At 1X, located in Palo Alto, CA, we are pioneers in developing humanoid robots that collaborate with humans to address labor shortages and foster abundance.
Your Role
As a Senior Functional Safety Engineer at 1X, you will take charge of ensuring the functional safety of our robotic systems throughout their lifecycle. Your responsibilities will include identifying hazards early, mitigating risks, and maintaining valid safety arguments as our robots evolve in autonomy and learning. You will shape the system-level safety architecture, incorporating safety mechanisms, redundancy, monitoring, and fault-handling strategies into the robot design. This critical position grants you broad technical authority, significantly influencing our robot's architecture and deployment readiness. You will report directly to the Director of Robot Safety.
Key Responsibilities
- Define and oversee the functional safety concept for our humanoid robotic systems.
- Lead and conduct system-level hazard analyses, including HARA, FMEA, and FTA.
- Develop and manage safety requirements across the system architecture.
- Establish safety mechanisms, including limits, monitors, and graceful degradation protocols.
- Contribute technically to safety cases and assurance arguments.
- Collaborate cross-functionally to influence architectural and design decisions.
- Support operational safety and continuous risk reassessment throughout the product lifecycle.
