CannonDesign is hiring a Senior Mechanical Project Engineer for its Arlington, VA office. This position supports a range of projects, from new construction to renovations, across education, healthcare, corporate, and science and technology sectors. The role involves close collaboration with a licensed engineer and regular interaction with clients and project teams.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead complex design work for ductwork, piping, and HVAC system equipment selection on large-scale building projects.
  • Support plumbing and fire protection design as needed.
  • Mentor and supervise junior designers and engineering staff, including conducting annual performance reviews and offering technical guidance.
  • Participate in quality assurance and quality control reviews as an independent reviewer.
  • Work with the Project Manager to develop and maintain project schedules, labor plans, and deliverables that align with financial and contractual requirements.
  • Engage with clients and coordinate with design team members throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Direct project team activities to ensure objectives are met.
  • Oversee advanced engineering tasks involving Energy Model software.
  • Prepare Revit/BIM models for HVAC system construction drawings, from schematic design through construction administration. Model plumbing and fire protection systems as required.
  • Specify mechanical equipment, such as boilers, chillers, and air handling units.
  • Review and approve shop drawings to confirm compliance with project specifications and contract documents.
  • Attend Owner, Architect, and Construction Administration meetings, focusing on project budgeting.
  • Lead or participate in value engineering sessions with architectural and engineering teams.
  • Recommend improvements to standards and processes to enhance quality, coordination, and production efficiency.
  • Support staff development activities, including work planning, budget development, and scheduling in partnership with the Project Manager.
  • Respond to Requests for Information and manage change order reviews during preparation.
