About the job

New Leaf Energy is a pioneering clean energy developer committed to facilitating the transition to a sustainable future powered by renewable energy. We collaborate with landowners, policymakers, and a variety of stakeholders to identify prime sites for development, ensuring impactful renewable energy projects come to fruition.

We are currently looking for a Senior Utility Electrical Engineer to join our dynamic team. While our preference is for this position to be based in Lowell or Boston, MA, we are open to candidates working from our offices in Oakland, Troy, or Chicago. We prioritize in-person collaboration within a hybrid work environment, requiring employees to be in the office at least two days a week (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday), while offering flexibility to work from home on other days.

In this role, you will assess potential distributed energy resources (DER) sites, draft regulatory policies, analyze proposed relaying and integration schemes, and provide engineering insights for optimal project integration with utility systems.

Internally, you will collaborate closely with teams from Interconnection, Policy, Project Development, and Development Engineering. Externally, you will act as the technical engineering lead, working with utility engineers across various service territories to design interconnection facilities and system modifications that allow for the connection of parallel distributed generators, all while ensuring the safe and reliable operation of the distribution system. Furthermore, you will be expected to develop a thorough understanding of New Leaf Energy's design philosophy, engineering standards, and their financial implications on projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate and provide actionable feedback on distribution- and ISO-level utility impact studies regarding accuracy, necessary system upgrades, project design modifications, and cost reasonability.
  • Assist project developers in assessing potential PV sites and provide interconnection cost estimates.
  • Review interconnection drawings and application packages to ensure compliance with relevant utility standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee the technical aspects of the interconnection process at the project level.
  • Offer training and support to the internal engineering team.
  • Engage in internal initiatives aimed at improving process efficiency and quality.
  • Actively participate in state- and industry-level technical policy working groups to advocate for policies and standards that facilitate renewable energy integration.
