About the job

Atomic Semi is developing a compact semiconductor fabrication facility in San Francisco. The team brings together mechanical, electrical, hardware, computer, and process engineering. Leadership includes Sam Zeloof, recognized for his garage chip manufacturing, and Jim Keller, who has over four decades in the semiconductor field.

The company values building small, fast, and self-made solutions. The lab is equipped with 3D printers, advanced microscopes, e-beam writers, and a variety of fabrication tools. When a needed tool is missing, the team creates it themselves.

Role overview

This fall internship runs for 4 to 8 months, starting in September, and is based onsite at the San Francisco office. The Infrastructure Software Engineering Intern will contribute to designing, building, deploying, and maintaining the on-premises backend infrastructure that supports semiconductor fabrication. Expect hands-on involvement across all layers of backend infrastructure and services.

How the team operates

Infrastructure at Atomic Semi is intentionally minimal and easy to understand, with a close connection to physical hardware. The technology stack uses bare-metal Linux, systemd, and single-file binaries. The team avoids Docker, cloud services, and Kubernetes. Most coding is done in Rust and Go, with some Python as needed.

Fast iteration is important. The team aims to build and test solutions in days or weeks rather than months.
