About the job
Western Digital is on the lookout for a skilled Mechanical Engineer with a minimum of 5 years of experience to design, develop, and validate mechanical components and assemblies for our Hard Disk Drive (HDD) product line and innovative data storage solutions. The selected engineer will lead precision mechanical design efforts for head-disk assemblies (HDA), actuators, base castings, and enclosures while adhering to rigorous performance and reliability standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- HDD-Specific Design & Development:
- Craft precision mechanical components for HDD systems, including:
- Head Stack Assembly (HSA) involving actuators, flex circuits, and voice coil motors
- Base casting and top cover assemblies
- Spindle motor integration and mounting systems
- Shock dampening and vibration isolation structures
- Breather filters and contamination control features
- Utilize advanced CAD (SolidWorks/NX) to develop parts with tight tolerances
- Apply geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) for drawings and 3D models, ensuring communication of ideal part specifications with allowable variations to meet functional requirements.
- Design components for ultra-clean operating environments (Class 10/100 cleanroom).
- Leverage 3D printing and rapid prototyping techniques to conduct design validation testing.
Analysis & Simulation:
- Conduct Finite Element Analysis (FEA) on structural components to optimize shock resistance and stiffness.
- Perform modal analysis to avoid resonance in actuator systems.
- Execute tolerance stack-up analysis for critical assemblies.
Testing & Validation:
- Design test fixtures and develop testing protocols for design validation.
- Carry out environmental tests for shock, vibration, and thermal cycling.
- Lead failure mode analysis and implement corrective actions (FMEA, root cause analysis).
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Engage with recording heads, media, firmware, and servo teams for seamless system integration.
- Collaborate with suppliers to establish specifications and maintain quality standards.
