About Formlabs

Formlabs designs advanced 3D printing tools that help people turn ideas into real products, from consumer electronics to medical devices. Over 50,000 companies worldwide use Formlabs printers, including Apple, Google, Tesla, New Balance, and NASA. The team includes builders, engineers, and innovators focused on changing how physical objects are made.

Role Overview: R&D Reliability/Test Engineer

Based in Boston, MA, the Reliability Engineering Team at Formlabs works to make hardware products dependable so customers can focus on printing, not troubleshooting. This role involves developing test strategies, building electro-mechanical test rigs, and analyzing data to improve product reliability.

The team values engineers who see both the big picture and the smallest details, and who can turn complex data into clear stories. Curiosity and a system-level view are important for success in this role.

What You Will Do

  • Design, implement, and manage validation test plans at system, subsystem, and component levels to confirm products meet design and reliability requirements.
  • Conduct hands-on, data-driven root cause analysis (RCA) of electromechanical subsystems and field failures using established problem-solving methods and a physics-of-failure approach.
  • Create and deploy automated testing equipment for subsystem characterization and reliability or environmental testing.
  • Work closely with R&D design teams throughout the product lifecycle to perform risk assessments, oversee ongoing testing, and contribute to design reviews so reliability is considered from the start.
  • Analyze field failure data, identify trends, prioritize investigations based on business impact, and develop clear, actionable corrective action plans (CAPAs).

Recent Team Impact: Form 4 Reliability

  • LCD & Light Engine: Built custom rigs to simulate UV light and heat, monitoring performance over thousands of hours.
